“I’ve fixed things with Agent Calvert,” Ransom told Haynes.

“Yeah? What was the snag?” Haynes did not seem worried.

“I don’t know. Guess some just aren’t as willing, but once I found out he had a few kids, I was able to convince him.” Ransom took his eyes off the road to glance at Haynes from time to time while he talked. “I explained how much more things cost every day, and how his daughters would grow up wanting fancy new dresses for all the events around, you know, sort of shamed him a little about leaving the easy money on the table.”

“And that did it?”

“That did it. He hasn’t been working the area long. He can always chalk some things up to ignorance, I suppose. Haynes?”

“Yeah?”

“There’s something I’d like to know.”

“What’s that?” Haynes never took his eyes off of the road, even though he was only the passenger.

“What’s your name? I don’t think I ever knew it.”

“Sure you did. It’s Haynes.”

“Haynes what? Is that your last name or your first?” Ransom pried.

“Look, it’s just Haynes. Don’t make this personal. Just call me Haynes.”

Ransom could not help but wonder why he was so enigmatic about it since Haynes seemed undaunted by the cloak and dagger nature of his work. Ransom was not sure, but his reaction caused him to drop the subject.

They continued down the road until they came to the old cabin where Ransom was to turn. He drove his car down the lane to the clearing and parked it. They got out and surveyed the space.

“Come on, Cahill.”

Ransom followed him down the path as before. When they approached the stone corridor, Haynes ran his hand along the wall for only a few feet before finding a switch. The dim light of the singular bulb falling on the once dark hallway of stone surprised Ransom.

“Electricity? Off the main road?”

“Yep, the transmission line was just over on the highway. Mr. Messina has friends at the Alabama Power Company, so we were able to get a line, and after a little work, the place is modernized.” Haynes nodded his head in the direction of the switch.

The road that brought them to the cave was a side road off Highway 31 that passed through Dunnigan and on to Birmingham. Ransom gathered that it was not a great distance from it, but he had not thought to notice whether there was a power line in sight as they arrived. When Haynes opened the door at the end of the passageway, he found another switch. He worked his way around the large cavernous room, turning on several lights. The sight was most impressive to Ransom. The empty cavern that had been illuminated by coal oil lamps just weeks before was now filled with modern light fixtures. In the center of the largest space hung a chandelier. Along the walls, there were sleek symmetrically placed art-deco sconces.

“This place looks splendid. I can hardly believe it!” Ransom’s eyes followed along the walls soaking in the details.

“Told you it was gonna be something to see.
